The Praxis Lab

Study Procedures:
You are being asked to participate in an online interview. This interview will last between 60-90 minutes. The interview will be conducted online, via Zoom, and will be audio and video recorded via Zoom’s recording platform. The interview questions are semi-structured, meaning that they are conversational, touching on topics related to: (1) How you think about and use AI; (2) How you think AI can be taught ethically; (3) Where you have learned to utilize AI, and what you wish you knew; (4) How AI can help with research projects; (5) Learning the best ways to use AI in research.
What is This About?
Qualitative researchers are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to help with their work. These new tools make it easier to write, organize information, and analyze data. However, the qualitative research community has mixed feelings about AI. While some see its benefits, others worry about its problems - like making mistakes, showing bias, or creating privacy concerns. For faculty of qualitative research, there are also concerns about students potentially misusing AI in their academic work. Teaching about AI in research has become a pressing challenge. It appears faculty fall into three main groups: those who are excited and ready to teach AI, those who don't trust it at all, and those who want to teach about AI but aren't sure how. This situation creates a problem for students, who need to learn these skills to be prepared for their future careers. To address this challenge, we're conducting research that brings together three important perspectives: teachers who lead qualitative research courses, experts who specialize in AI research, and students who are learning these new methods. By understanding how each group views and uses AI, we can develop better ways to teach students about using AI effectively and ethically in their research work. The goal is to help students stay competitive in their fields while ensuring they understand how to teach responsible use of AI in qualitative research. This knowledge will become increasingly important as AI continues to shape how qualitative research is done.
